Program Overview and Aims

Overview:


The Kuwait Board in Paediatric Dentistry is a three-year residency program (KBPD R3–R5), in which residents have already successfully completed two years of general dental residency (R1–R2).

The program is designed to advance residents' clinical expertise in paediatric dentistry, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, child-focused care, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Aims:

  • Develop exceptional skills in delivering high-quality, comprehensive dental care to infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special healthcare needs.

  • Gain competence in diagnosis, prevention, and management of oral diseases specific to the paediatric population.

  • Formulate well-structured, age-appropriate treatment plans that reflect the behavioural, developmental, and medical considerations unique to children.

  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment, recognizing case complexity, limitations, and the need for consultation or referral to other specialties when appropriate.

  • Coordinate treatment effectively when collaboration with other healthcare professionals is required.

  • Build confidence and competence in managing the full spectrum of paediatric dental needs, including dental emergencies, behaviour management, and sedation techniques.

  • Foster a commitment to self-directed learning and continuous professional development.

  • Uphold the highest standards of professional ethics and demonstrate cultural sensitivity in the delivery of paediatric oral healthcare.

Program Objectives

By the end of the program, residents will be competent in:

  • Designing comprehensive, well-sequenced treatment plans that address the dental, developmental, and behavioural needs of paediatric patients.

  • Practicing evidence-based paediatric dentistry.

  • Critically appraising the dental literature relevant to paediatric care.

  • Applying current concepts of minimally invasive and preventive dentistry in the paediatric population.

  • Diagnosing and managing pulpally involved primary teeth using appropriate pulpotomy and pulpectomy techniques.

  • Performing root canal treatments for immature and mature permanent teeth in children and adolescents using current materials and techniques.

  • Recognizing and managing space maintenance and space regaining using removable and fixed appliances.

  • Understanding growth and development principles and applying them in the diagnosis and management of developing malocclusion.

  • Planning and managing interceptive orthodontic treatment when appropriate.

  • Providing behaviour guidance and management techniques including non-pharmacological methods, nitrous oxide sedation, and working with general anaesthesia cases when necessary.

  • Diagnosing and managing dental anomalies and developmental defects in children.

  • Managing trauma to primary and young permanent teeth in accordance with international guidelines.

  • Recognizing oral manifestations of systemic conditions and collaborating with medical teams as needed.

  • Practicing paediatric dentistry in accordance with global standards of infection control and radiation protection, especially considering the paediatric population.

  • Preventing, recognizing, and managing medical emergencies in children.

  • Managing clinic time efficiently while maintaining a child-friendly, safe, and supportive dental environment.
